The film’s original director, Bassam Tariq, left the project amidst unconfirmed reports that star Mahershala Ali was unhappy with the script. The Blade movie has suffered a number of production delays, even beyond the most recently announced delays due to the Actors and Writers Strikes. Audiences would see Ghost Rider, the concept, as one of the major long-term elements of the franchise moving forward.Back in December 2021, Giant Freakin Robot exclusively reported on the casting of Norman Reedus as Ghost Rider, though at the time it was not known when the Walking Deadstar would make his first MCU appearance. Unlike Thor, who is sort of tied to one identity, Marvel Studios could have three different Ghost Riders over the course of the MCU that signify different eras. Once the actor playing Johnny Blaze's contract is up and their story is over, they have various different versions of the character that could take on the mantle and keep the franchise going for years to come. With so many other potential Ghost Riders, this gives Marvel Studios a long-term plan for the character. The first Ghost Rider is also the one in the best position to set the stage for a potential franchise within the MCU, with his rebellion against Mephisto and his conflict with the demon's forces being the perfect vehicle for a Marvel cross-over. Story-wise, Johnny Blaze's narrative is the one that's most closely tied to Mephisto and would, therefore, be the easiest one to tie into existing Marvel properties. Because of this, it is more sensible to use the original version of the character than one that arrived much later in the narrative. As with any new character, there is a heck of a lot of background for a potential Ghost Rider film to set up. While he has already been portrayed on film before, this would be the first outing of his character for the MCU. This would link the character to another member of the MCU with few direct ties to the other heroes to muddy the waters. Should Mephisto make an appearance, then Blaze could be introduced in one of those projects. Mephisto is heavily rumored to be part of Agatha: Darkhold Diaries and Ironheart, where he is rumored to be played by Sacha Baron Cohen. In the comics, Mephisto has been associated with characters like Spider-Man, the Scarlet Witch, and Agatha Harkness. Johnny Blaze, for example, first received his powers from the demon Mephisto. Each of the different versions of the character has elements of their backgrounds that could tie into already established elements of the MCU. Ghost Rider would be no exception to this. A child version of Ketch was featured in 2012's Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance as a young boy, Johnny Blaze must protect from the devil.Ī major hallmark of the MCU heroes is how their stories tie into one another. This iteration rode an updated motorcycle and had a far less antagonistic relationship with the spirit that empowered him, who was not a demon but the spirit of a deceased ancestor (former rider Noble Kale). Coming into contact with it turned him into the newest Ghost Rider. He happened upon a motorcycle containing a sigil not unlike the one bound to Johnny Blaze. Ketch gained the powers of Ghost Rider when he and his sister were attacked by, well, gangster ninjas (to be fair, it was the 90s). In the 90s, Blaze was succeeded by Danny Ketch. This version of Ghost Rider is easily the most recognizable by fans of the comics and films alike. Blaze is cursed to transform into the fearsome Ghost Rider in the presence of evil, bringing retribution to the wicked and sending their souls down to Hell. First featured in 1972, Blaze is a carnival stunt performer who sold his soul in an attempt to save his adoptive father, only to be bound to a Spirit of Vengeance by the demon, Mephisto. The Ghost Rider most people think of is Johnny Blaze. Rather than simply being cut-and-paste versions of a largely unchanged character, each one of these three has their own distinct stories, traits, and even enemies. That all being said, the Ghost Rider identity has been predominantly held by three different characters in the comics.
